…was the shit. You know it. Its getting a 21st century facelift and lets hope they don’t screw it up. Jeff Bridges is going to reprise his role in it and he’s coming off a monster film with “Crazy Heart” so I imagine he’s gonna smash it.
But, seriously folks, Daft Punk is on the soundtrack. Seriously.
Hearing Badu do what she do-do I feel like Ken Tanaka when he told Emma in Glee, “I’m a good man, I’ll put up with all of your crazy” (Yes, I watch Glee, fuck you)
Badu drops a track with Weezy and Bilal and the smashed out drums in the intro just do it for me. All the rest is icing on this big cake of what is sure to be batshit craziness in the clever guise of musical amazingness. Or vice versa.
Yeah…. had to step out of the blogosphere to get the bills paid… its a recession yo… But we are back and we missed you all and we hope 2010 has been good to you thus far.
On to the dopeness:
New Sade:
I’m not on the Cougar-loving wagon with the idealization (and perhaps idolization?) of old ladies, but Sade…. damn… she has always had it.
Found three new tracks from her upcoming album “Soldier of Love”. Listen to it here, here, and here
This Revolution Will Not Be Televised:
Gil Scott Heron is the epitome of revolutionary artist. His new album “I’m New Here” shows him doing some pieces that seem to be way out of his comfort zone… and yet his voice settles so comfortably into the austere tracks. Amazing. (The video is directed by Coodie and Chike who work very closely with Dame Dash who I still think will OWN 2010)
can’t ride a white stallion like Sade can. That’s a fact. Check the new video for the single “Soldier of Love” off of Sade’s album by the same title. She still has it ladies and lady-lovers. Very geeked about this album dropping. Baby-making album of the new decade? Probably.
Happy new decade ya’ll. Didn’t get a chance to break down a “Best Of” list for the year OR the decade. Life’s been crazy lately. I will venture two things though.
1. Radiohead’s OK Computer gets album of the decade. Sounded hella futuristic and perfectly encapsulated the weird inter-dread of the early Naughts. Virtual life was exploding, the world was getting infinitesimally smaller and alienation was rampant. OK Computer summed it all up. Damn near perfectly.
2. Kanye West may not be the voice of our generation (I speak for my own damn self thank you very much) but he is an amazing pop star. With that being said, West’s album “808s and Heartbreak” was his best work yet. I won’t defend that. Just accept it. (Although, his work with Jon Brion on Late Registration was pretty damn pretty also. I’ll have to debate this one a bit further.)
With THAT being said… I give you this week’ NMT. Three albums/mixtapes from 2009 (I think) that showcase the breadth and depth of where Hip Hop is at as an artform. These all struck me on the first listen through and have held up with time. Enjoy.
P.O.S- Never Better

Hip hop meets Punk Rock. P.O.S grew up playing punk rock, started messing with hip hop as he got older, and eventually helped found the Doomtree Collective. He manages to reference Mitch Hedburg (one of my fav comedians) and The Big Lebowski (The dude does indeed abide) in the same song. Worthwhile. Trust.
Theophilus London- This Charming Mixtape

Hip hop meets House music? I can’t quite pin this one. He samples Coldplay, covers Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, and Bill Withers. You’re gonna hear some conga line samples, some clean drum ‘n bass, and just general balderdashery. This shit is just straight crazy. Probably one of my faves. Some of the ill-literacy homies will be posting up some exclusive video soon. Keep you posted.
Mos Def- The Ecstatic

Hip Hop meets Hip Hop. Mos Def is our Michelangelo. Straight up Renaissance dude. Do not sleep on this album. Please.
Picasso and Neruda shaped my vision at different points in my life. “Guernica” has always stood out as one of my favorite pieces of Picasso’s. The violence depicted in the piece is given further texture when viewed in context of the actual events. I don’t know much about high art or what have you, but the visceral nature of this piece is extraordinary, even years removed from its creation. This video, in 3D, almost lets you hear the screams being drowned out by the raging fires and the whizzing of the bombs as they drop from the sky.
And in a different world, a different era, Pablo Neruda shaped Latin American literature (and literature as a whole for that matter) with his incredibly diverse and yet always passionate body of work. For me, the lilting lyricism in his pieces gets lost in translation, so I give you the original first. His mastery of the written language and the seemingly simple yet oh so complex imagery he uses amazes me. Enjoy.
arde nuestra bandera delicada.
Right, comrade, it’s the hour of the garden
Right, comrade, it’s the hour of the garden
and the hour up in arms, each day
follows from flower or blood:
our time surrenders us to an obligation
to water the jasmines
or bleed to death in a dark street:
virtue or pain blows off
into frozen realms, into hissing embers,
and there never was a choice:
heaven’s roads,
once the by-ways of saints,
are jammed now with experts.
Already the horses have vanished.
Heroes hop around like toads,
mirrors live out emptinesses
because the party is happening somewhere else,
wherever we aren’t invited
and fights frame themselves in doorjambs.
That’s why this is the last call,
the tenth clear
ringing of my bell:
to the garden, comrade, to the pale lily,
to the apple tree, to the intransigent carnation,
to the fragrance of lemon blossoms,
and then to the ultimatums of war.
Ours is a lank country
and on the naked edge of her knife
our frail flag burns.
Jigga man gets the decade started with a visually stunning video. This was probably my favorite track on the first listen-through of the album. The jacket he’s wearing is dope. Anybody want to cop me one?
Here is Kriskha feat. Journey To The End – “Pillz Don’t Kill”
Not usually my cup of tea, this style of music, but the video is dope. Enjoy.
